A beginner guide to premade volume fans, tray specs, adhesive basics, starter kits, common mistakes, and OEM/ODM quality checks.
Premade vs handmade fans
Premade volume fans are factory-made lash fans that are ready to pick up, dip, and apply. Handmade fans are created by the artist during the appointment. For beginners, premades reduce the technical barrier of live fan creation and make it easier to practice isolation, placement, and adhesive control.
The trade-off is customization. Premades deliver speed and consistency, while handmade fans can be tailored more precisely to the client natural lashes and styling goal.
How to choose your first premade trays
Start with conservative specs. Many beginners do well with 3D to 5D fans, diameters around 0.05 to 0.07 mm, C or D curls, and mixed lengths from about 8 to 15 mm. Stronger natural lashes may support more density, but weight matching should always come first.
- Natural look: 2D-3D fans, C curl, 9-12 mm mixed lengths.
- Hybrid look: classics mixed with 3D-5D premades.
- Volume look: 3D-5D to start, then progress carefully to 6D-8D.
Adhesive and room conditions
A beginner-friendly adhesive usually gives the artist enough working time to isolate, dip, and place accurately. Room temperature and humidity affect cure speed, so use a hygrometer and follow the adhesive technical sheet.
Dip only the base of the fan. Over-dipping floods the base, closes the fan, and can create stickies. A small, controlled bead is easier to place cleanly.
Starter kit checklist
- Isolation tweezers, volume tweezers, lash tile, glue holders, and spoolies.
- Premade fan trays in beginner-friendly densities, curls, and mixed lengths.
- Oil-free lash cleanser, under-eye pads, tape, primer if trained, and lint-free applicators.
- Beginner adhesive, remover, bonder if trained, and adhesive wipes.
- Disinfection supplies, appointment brush, and simple aftercare cards.
Common beginner mistakes
The most common problems are heavy fans on weak natural lashes, inconsistent isolation, too much adhesive, and poor placement angle. Slow down and master clean placement before trying to increase speed or density.
For brands and wholesalers, evaluate premade trays by base bonding, fan symmetry, curl retention, diameter tolerance, packaging labels, and lot traceability.
